CAMRA sets up discovery zone at the Great British Beer Festival

CAMRA is continuing to play a leading role in helping beer-lovers across the country learn and discover more about their favourite drink.

Appearing  at its flagship event, the Great British Beer Festival, the new Discovery zone will give members and festival-goers guidance and advice on beer, cider and perry – from their ingredients and the brewing process, to history and types of dispense.

Information can be accessed via online toolkits within the all-new Learn & Discover platform as well as at CAMRA’s 180+ beer festivals across the UK.

Visitors to the Great British Beer Festival this week can experience:

  • Head brewers talking about their beer range with representation from Harvey’s, the Queer Brewing Project, Adnams, Hammerton and Five Points

  • Comparative tastings between cask and keg, with information on the different methods of beer dispense

  • The chance to interact with high-quality brewing ingredients, with hops and malts provided by Charles Faram Hops Merchants and Crisp Malt

  • Award-winning beer writer and broadcaster Emma Inch of Fermentation Radio will be recording a podcast at the festival about CAMRA’s commitment to helping people learn more about beer.

Alex Metcalfe, Learn & Discover Manager at CAMRA said: “The idea is to help anyone become a beer connoisseur, to make the information accessible and available to all.

“Beer can be seen as an exclusive or ‘geeky’ hobby, which can be off-putting when a novice is trying to decide what to order at the bar. As a consumer organisation, we want to provide all the resources available to help more people feel informed and confident about their favourite drink.”

The Discovery Zone is a vital part of CAMRA’s new ‘10 Great Reasons’ campaign to recruit new members. ‘10 Great Reasons’ aims to demonstrate the many facets of CAMRA membership and its values to today’s beer drinkers.

Nik Antona, CAMRA National Chairman said: “CAMRA is sometimes called an ‘old man’s drinking club’ – but it is so much more than that to so many people. Whether you decide to join to campaign for great real ale and cider, to save your local from closure, to find the best pubs in Britain or to get more value for money, there really is no better time to support the organisation.

“That’s why we’ve come up with 10 Great Reasons to join – and I’m very proud that our Learn & Discover offering will become a new great reason to participate for anyone with an interest in beer and brewing.”

Free Discover Zones will be rolled out at CAMRA beer festivals across the country, with basic beer-focused content available to anyone on the Learn & Discover platform. Members will be able to access additional ‘enthusiast’ and ‘connoisseur’ content, which will continue to be built over the coming months.
