By the end of the course, learners will:
- Know the benefits of pairing beer with food
- Understand food and beverage matching in a historical, social, and political context
- Understand the perception of flavour
- Understand principal taste interactions between beer and food
- Understand the impact of intensity when matching beer and food
- Understand the concept of the three ‘C’s (Complement, Contrast, Cut)
- Be able to apply and explain beer matching principles with a range of food
- Know how to plan and deliver a beer and food pairing event
A workbook and supporting documents will be provided during the course.

No.
Who is the course for?
Hospitality and brewing sector employees, chefs, food technicians, beer and food enthusiasts.
NB: All applicants for Beer Sommelier assessment are required to pass the Beer and Food Pairing course.
How is it assessed?
20 question multiple choice test; pass mark 80% [16 out of 20]
What certification do I get?
On passing the test, learners will receive the Guild of Beer Sommeliers Beer and Food Pairing Certificate.

- Understand the causes of ‘off flavours’ in beer
- Understand how to minimise/prevent ‘off flavours’ in beer
- Know the methods used to critically analyse the quality of beer
- Understand a range of beer judging criteria
- Be able to critically evaluate and judge the quality of beer
A workbook and supporting documents will be provided during the course.
Is any pre-requisite learning required?
Learners are required to pass the WSET Level 2 Award in Beer prior to attending this course.
NB: All applicants for Beer Sommelier assessment are required to pass the How to Judge Beer and Understanding ‘Off Flavours’ course.
How is it assessed?

What certification do I get?
